Greta
The pearl from Sweden

Springtime in Stockholm at last! Kungsträdgården in the heart of the city is awash in cherry blossoms and the open air restaurants and cafés are filled with people gazing towards the sun. The long cold winter is finally over and the winter clothes are finding a new home in the back of the closet. Suddenly the thought of updating the spring wardrobe is beginning to grow. What can be a better way to celebrate the arrival of spring than to buy a new dress?

Take a look at the new Swedish brand Greta.

It all started with a swimwear collection
From the beginning Greta was a swimwear brand. The women behind the brand, Josefine Rosengren and Hanna Olsson, are living in Beijing, China and when doing research for tunics in the swimwear collection they stumbled onto the beautiful silk cloth that is so traditionally Chinese. As many of us they had difficulties to find basic clothes in good design and materials so they decided to start designing themselves. Inspired by the beauty of the materials and surrounded by a culture of excellent sewing they found it easy to realize their visions and ideas. They take pride in making clothes that actually fits real women.

"Inspiration comes from everyday life, we want the brand to be associated with simplicity and recognition and we want to create timeless classics in different materials and colors," Josefine Rosengren says.

Greta´s first dress collection, summer 2010, consists of six different models, all in bright colors. Depending on accessories and shoes, the

dresses are suitable both for everyday wear and for eveningwear. I can really imagine myself in the orange dress with a belt or the black one with a v–neck. Or why not both of them? They will sell the belts separately so you can vary the dresses the way you want. For the fall they will also launch some evening dresses.

The philosophy behind Greta is to design clothes that a woman will never tire of. They believe that if you find a nice piece of clothing that fits you well, you will probably want to have it in several colors.

Both of the designers have a varied background and have worked with everything from shoes to PR to fashion shows but they have always taken an interest in fashion and clothes, even if they don´t see themselves as slaves to trends. As far as the swimwear they originally began designing, they still adhere to their philosophy of simple, well fitting items. Regardless if you take a stroll in the city or at the beach, a Greta woman is always in style.

So, what´s behind the name Greta? I first thought of another Swedish fashion brand, Dagmar, which was named after the designers´ (three sisters) grandmother. But Greta has nothing to do with a person. It´s a short version of the Greek name Margareta (Margarita) which, in its earlier Persian form, meant pearl. As Greta´s logotype is embraced with two strings of pearls the name was given.

Are they a pearl amongst the Swedish designers? Well, take a look for yourself. All retailers for the brand are listed at their website, which will soon become a webshop.
