Matthias van Arkel
silicon and spray

This spring SuperLounge paid a visit to Galerie Aronowitsch in Stockholm to experience Matthias van Arkel´s fifth exhibition at Aronowitsch, "Closer". A month earlier, we had seen Matthias in action making an exciting wall–painting at the Stockholm furniture fair. The painting was made on one wall of the Bogesunds stand as they were presenting their very first "Artist Collection", consisting of the interior textiles "Spray" and "Monochrome", accidentally designed by the very same Matthias van Arkel.

After these special encounters with Matthias van Arkel´s art, we met at his Studio on Kungsholmen in Stockholm to know more about his way of working and his driving forces as a contemporary artist. What made him become an artist in the first place? "My father was an artist, a painter, and I had the impression that this was a profession just like any other. From an early age I followed him around in his studio and went along in the family car as he drove out into the countryside to work. In the 9th grade I started to draw a lot, mostly figurative, like people, landscape and portraits. My teachers were very supportive and encouraged me to apply to art school. I was accepted by three different schools and started Konstfack in 1986 and I simply loved it all!

When did you realize that your artistry was meant to be your full time profession?
"First of all, having a talent often implies that you have an opportunity to make an earnest living and be a bit businesslike about it, whatever talent you possess. For me, when I was an art–student at Kungliga Konsthögskolan (The Royal University of Fine Arts) in the early 90´s different opportunities to participate in exhibitions and galleries __________________________________________________________________________

opened up. That´s probably when I realized that my artistry was my lifestyle and the only way to act was to be professional about it.

Driving forces and inspiration?
"Curiosity of course and the fact that I love art, get a kick of looking at other people´s work of art and get inspired by all different kinds of work. Tough materials, distinctive techniques and music are true sources of inspiration. I´m interested in catching the moment and the pure sense of serendipity. A material like silicone rubber is industries, resistant yet shows surprising transparency that is challenging. By making incisions with my scalpel the material shows new ways of expression.

Most known for his striking, colourful and physical objects in silicone rubber, Matthias seems to be heading in a direction that will make his spatial expressions available to the art–loving public in more ways than one.

What about your work together with Bogesunds?
To work with Bogesunds gave me as an artist an opportunity to create something completely new. To be able to implement my ideas on a new material with the help of modern technique such as computerised jacquard – and weaving machines has added new dimensions to my creative work. The process is very interesting and somewhat different from when I work in my studio with paint or silicone rubber.

Looking ahead I want to work more to develop a synesthetic experience on the art scene to activate different senses simultaneously. A spatial touchable 3D experience.

Whatever happens, we can assure you that SuperLounge will continue to follow Matthias van Arkel and his whereabouts and for those of you that are travelling in the south of Sweden this summer don´t miss the opportunity to visit Höganäs museum and Matthias van Arkel´s solo–show from May 29 until July 11.

Remember seeing an exhibition with Matthias van Arkel at Aronowitsch. But that must be at least ten years ago! Great to hear he's doing good.
