Welldone
2009-01-04     Norway
Welldone is a silicone cookware by Anders August Kittelsen, student at The Oslo School of Architecture and Design. It is also the winning project at the national design competition organized by Electrolux. The flexible material has inspired the designer to create bendable pans on which you simply press the sides together to enclose. The process of heating up a silicone pan is faster compared to steel and aluminium and the pan will also keep food warm longer. It could even be freezed or put in the micro wave. Follow the link to see the designer’s own presentation of the project.

Ceramics by Erna Aaltonen
2008-10-23     Finland
Exhibited at Galleria Norsu are the newest works by Erna Aaltonen in which she has studied the vertical, forms that rise from a freely amoeba like base. The form is always changing when looked at from different perspectives. Aaltonen is one of Finland’s foremost ceramicists. Her ceramics are characterized by especially round, sculptural forms that remind us of the passing of time, by forms and colours that are a pleasure to the eye. The surfaces are uneven; a light touch makes you think of the sensation of coarse sand between your toes. Galleria Norsu 23.10.-22.11.2008

The aim is to provide new solutions, not to make up new problems. The FM/AM radio is a good example of the group’s design principles. It is an interpretation of what is fundamental in the essence and functions of a radio. The shape resembling measuring equipment amuses but also brings out everything that is needed.

The Sustainable Wheel
2007-12-18     Sweden
David Report follows up the Design Boost event by dedicating issue #8 to sustainability. “The climate debate is probably the one sole topic getting the most attention in the global media torrent. The discussions on sustainable design are there, lurking in the shadows, but David Report is of the opinion that the concept is too narrow. Often it is about romanticising different ways of production, with emphasis on the environmental aspect which of course is important, but we shouldn’t forget that design is more complex than that. ”Green” or ”eco” are only parts of the concept sustainable design.”

DDC defines design
2007-12-03     Denmark
What is design? The design field seems to be going through a faze of change. Danish Design Centre has taken on the task of updating the design term, and the result sounds simple: Design = aesthetics + added value, or in Danish: Design = æstetik + merværdi. Design is a result of creative work based upon an idea, a problem or a desire for change. The result, material or immaterial, should be characterized by aestetics and create added value.
